What is an invisible injury?

Invisible injuries don’t get a lot of light in the medical world because they are exactly that - invisible. While there are many different types that can look very different from person to person, there is often a traumatic event that was the leading cause of the injury. It can affect all aspects of your life, from cognitive difficulties to behavioral and emotional struggles. Simply put, an invisible injury is a personal struggle that others can’t see and may not realize you’re experiencing in the moment.

For me, my invisible injury began with a TBI, or a Traumatic Brain Injury. I took a bad fall down the stairs in the summer of 2024, and haven’t quite been the same since. I’ve struggled with chronic brain fog, memory loss, and episodes of derealization and depersonalization (or in other words, feeling like I’m super far away from everything and everyone around me). It’s often difficult to describe what your injury feels like, let alone get a diagnosis for it, and start your healing journey. Notes for Hope aims to not only share the part of the healing journey that has to do with music, but also aims to shed light on what is often not talked about in a medical environment - the invisible injury. Whether you are struggling with one yourself, know someone in your life who is, or just want to learn more, feel free to reach out! We can’t wait to hear from you.
